Most birthday greetings fail the same way: they say something nice that could have been said to anybody. Wishing you happiness, health and love is three abstract nouns and no information, which is why it reads like a card somebody bought in a hurry.

A greeting works when it observes something before it wishes something. The observation does not have to be dramatic - you are not always good at noticing how many people are glad you exist is an ordinary sentence, and it lands, because the wish that follows it has somewhere to stand.

The fifty below are longer than a single card line, grouped by tone and relationship. If you would rather write your own, our birthday prompts help you find the detail that makes a message personal, and there are shorter finished messages in our happy birthday wishes collection.

How to Pick One That Does Not Sound Copied

  • Change one thing. Add a name, a place, a shared reference. One specific detail is enough to turn a borrowed sentence into yours, and it is the only edit most of these need.
  • Cut to fit the channel. These are written at card and message length. For a text or a comment under a post, keep the first sentence and delete the rest.
  • Say slightly less than you feel, not more. Overstated warmth reads as insincere, particularly to somebody you are not close to. Restraint is what makes the sincere ones work.
  • If the year has been hard, acknowledge it briefly and move on. Pretending otherwise is more awkward than mentioning it. There is a section for exactly this at the end.

Heartfelt Birthday Greetings

Ten for people you are close to, where you can afford to say something real. Each opens with an observation and closes with the wish, which is the order that makes a greeting land.

Happy birthday. I am not going to pretend I say this often enough, but having you in my life has made a genuine difference to how it has gone. I hope today gives you a fraction of what you have given other people.
Happy birthday. You have been the same steady person through every version of my life, which is rarer than you probably think it is. Here is to another year of it.
Happy birthday. You do a lot of small things for people that nobody ever thanks you for, so consider this an attempt at catching up. I hope somebody looks after you today for a change.
Wishing you a year with noticeably more of what you actually want in it. You have spent enough of them accommodating everybody else's plans, and today seems a reasonable place to stop.
Happy birthday. I hope this year is kinder to you than the last one was. Whatever it brings, I am glad to be around for it.
Happy birthday. You are one of very few people I never have to explain myself to, and I have never properly said how much that is worth. Have a good day.
Another year of knowing you and it still has not got old. I hope today is unhurried, that the weather behaves, and that somebody else does the washing up.
Happy birthday. Thank you for being exactly who you are rather than the more convenient version people occasionally ask for. Please do not change it.
Happy birthday. I hope today reminds you how many people are quietly glad you exist, because you are not always very good at noticing that.
Happy birthday. I hope you get one entire day with nothing expected of you, which I realise is a bigger ask than it sounds. You have earned it several times over.

If you only change one word in any of these, make it a name. A greeting with somebody's name in it reads as written rather than chosen.

Funny Birthday Greetings

Eight for friends who would find sincerity alarming. Teasing works when the affection underneath is obvious, so pick the one that sounds like you rather than the funniest one on the list.

Happy birthday. I have known you long enough to have a genuinely extensive amount of material, and out of respect for the occasion I am choosing not to use any of it. This year.
Congratulations on surviving another year, which given some of your decisions is a more impressive achievement than it sounds. Have a good one.
Happy birthday. I did not get you anything, but I want you to know I thought about it seriously for several days, which I feel should count for something.
Another year of you being right about things and me refusing to acknowledge it. I look forward to continuing that arrangement indefinitely. Happy birthday.
Happy birthday. You get one day a year on which being completely insufferable about yourself is socially permitted. I trust you to use it properly.
Happy birthday. I would write something sincere here, but I know you would find it alarming, so instead: well done on the birthday, keep going.
Aging is mandatory. Growing up remains entirely optional, and you have made your position on that admirably clear over the years. Happy birthday.
Happy birthday. I hope your day is as good as you deserve, which for the avoidance of doubt is a high bar and not a joke.

Avoid jokes about the number unless they genuinely find their age funny. It is the most common misfire in birthday messages and the sender rarely notices.

Romantic Birthday Greetings

Seven for a partner. These are the ones most likely to be over-edited, so resist adding a fourth sentence to any of them.

Happy birthday. I still cannot quite believe my luck, and I have had years to get used to it. I hope today is entirely about you, because it should be.
Happy birthday to the person I would choose again, on any day, in any version of this. I hope this year gives you everything you have been quietly hoping for.
Happy birthday. You make ordinary days worth looking forward to, which is a far harder thing to do than making special ones good.
Happy birthday. Of everything I have managed to get right, you are the part I am proudest of. Here is to another year of not entirely deserving it.
Another year of you, and I am nowhere near finished. I hope today feels the way you make most days feel for me.
Happy birthday. Being properly known by somebody turns out to be the best thing there is, and you have done that for me for years now without making a thing of it.
Happy birthday. I hope today is slow, that nothing goes wrong, and that at some point you get to sit down. I will handle the rest of it.

One sentence sent on the morning of beats three sentences sent at eleven at night. Timing does more for a romantic message than wording does.

Birthday Greetings for Family

Eight for parents, siblings and grandparents. These carry more weight than people expect, particularly coming from somebody who does not usually say much.

Happy birthday. You held a great deal together for a long time and I do not think anybody thanked you properly at the time, so I am doing it now.
Happy birthday to the person who taught me most of what I actually use day to day, very little of which was ever presented as a lesson at the time.
Happy birthday. I know I do not call as often as I should. I am thinking about you today, and I will do better about the rest of it.
Wishing you a birthday at least as good as the ones you used to put together for me, which is a high standard and one you set entirely yourself.
Happy birthday. I have turned into you in considerably more ways than I am prepared to admit out loud, and on balance I am glad about it.
Happy birthday. Thank you for being somewhere I can always come back to, regardless of how long it has been. I hope this year is gentle with you.
Happy birthday. You have been quietly generous for as long as I can remember and you have never once mentioned it. I want you to know I noticed.
Happy birthday. Whatever else changes, this does not, and I find that more reassuring with every year that passes. Have a good day.

Say the thing you assume they already know. With family it is usually the unsaid obvious thing that means most, precisely because it has gone unsaid for so long.

Professional Birthday Greetings

Seven for colleagues, managers and clients. Plain is correct here. A professional greeting that reaches for warmth it has not earned is more awkward than a short one.

Happy birthday. It is genuinely a pleasure working with you, and I hope you manage to switch off properly for the day.
Wishing you a very happy birthday and a good year ahead, professionally and otherwise. Thank you for everything over the last one.
Happy birthday. The team is measurably better with you in it, which is not something I say simply to be polite. Enjoy the day.
Happy birthday. I hope you get a proper break today rather than the usual arrangement of answering messages between candles.
Wishing you a happy birthday and continued success. It has been a good year working alongside you, and I hope the next one is better still.
Happy birthday. Thank you for the steady work and the good humour, both of which have been noticed even when they have not been mentioned.
Happy birthday. Wishing you a straightforward day and a year with rather fewer fire drills in it than the last one had.

Check whether the person wants their birthday known at work before posting it anywhere public. Plenty of people would rather it passed quietly.

Short Birthday Greetings

Five deliberately brief ones, for texts, comments and cards with very little room. Short is not a compromise. Sent on the morning of, a five-word message beats a paragraph sent at eleven at night.

Happy birthday. Thinking of you today.
Happy birthday. Hope today is exactly what you want it to be.
Have the day you deserve. Happy birthday.
Happy birthday. Glad you were born.
Happy birthday. No notes.

Send it in the morning. Almost nobody does, and it is the cheapest way to make a four-word message memorable.

Birthday Greetings for a Difficult Year

The section most greetings lists leave out, which is why people either send something cheerful that lands badly or send nothing at all. Somebody grieving, unwell or having a hard year still has a birthday, and being skipped is worse than being acknowledged imperfectly.

Happy birthday. I know this year has been a hard one and I am not going to pretend otherwise. I hope today is easier than most of the ones before it.
Thinking of you today. I know it is complicated this year, and there is no way you are supposed to feel about it. Happy birthday anyway.
Happy birthday. I am not going to tell you next year will be better, because neither of us knows that. I will be around for it either way.
I know today is going to be a difficult one. I am here if you want company and equally here if you would rather not talk. No reply needed.
Thinking of you, and of them, today. Happy birthday.

Keep it short and do not ask a question. A message that needs no reply is a kindness when somebody has not got the energy to write one.

Personalise a Birthday Greeting with Chat Smith

Any greeting on this page becomes yours with one specific detail added, and that is the only job worth handing to a model. Paste the one you like, tell it one true thing about the person, and ask it to work that detail in without lengthening the message. Claude Haiku 4.5 is quick at giving you three versions to choose between, and an AI rewording tool handles a tighter phrasing when a card is short of space.

What not to do is ask a model to write the whole message from nothing. It will produce something warm and interchangeable, which is the exact problem this page exists to solve. If you want help finding the detail rather than the words, the birthday prompts linked above are built to interrogate you instead. For the card itself, the birthday card generator handles the design once the words are settled.

For birthday photos rather than words, see Gemini birthday prompts for men, for women and for kids. Chat Smith is free to try.

Frequently Asked Questions

Birthday greetings are the short messages you send to mark someone's birthday, from a two-line text to a handwritten card. The memorable ones follow a simple shape: name the person, add one detail only you would mention, then give a wish that fits the year they are heading into.
