OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026, succeeding GPT-5.6 Sol as its most capable model. Astra saturates FrontierMath Tier 4 at 97.6% and ARC-AGI-3 at 99.9%, and sets a new state of the art on computer use, browsing, software engineering, and science. It ships with a 1,050,000-token context window, a 128K max output, an April 30, 2026 knowledge cutoff, and a reasoning effort scale that now extends to a new max setting.
What makes GPT-6 Astra stand out
The strongest computer-use model to date. On OSWorld 2.0, Astra scores 72.6% at roughly 40 minutes per task, against 65.7% at roughly 75 minutes for GPT-5.6 Sol — higher accuracy in about 47% less time. It reaches 92.7% on ScreenSpot-Pro, up from Sol's 76.9%, and 59.3% on Agents' Last Exam, ahead of both Sol at 53.6% and Claude Opus 5 at 55.5%.
Output you can actually hand off. Astra is trained to follow existing templates and pull only the context that matters into a deliverable, producing documents, spreadsheets, and slide decks that match a house style instead of generic filler. It scores 41.4% on AutomationBench against Sol's 18.1%, and 95.9% on BenchCAD against 83.3%.
Better coding, and it holds up deep into long context. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 Astra reaches 57.9%, up from Sol's 37.3%, and 74.1% on DeepSWE v1.1. Recall stays reliable at the far end of the window: on OpenAI's MRCR v2 8-needle test between 512K and 1M tokens it scores 96.3%, against 73.8% for Sol.
Better judgment when a request is ambiguous. Astra asks a focused question when the answer could change the outcome and proceeds on sensible assumptions when it cannot, and it stays oriented when a task shifts mid-course instead of treating a steering message as a brand-new goal. OpenAI reports it made misleading claims about its own capabilities on 4.2% of an internal hallucination benchmark, down from 12.2% for Sol.
