Gemini 2.0 Flash was the first model in Google's Gemini 2.0 family, positioned as a fast, general-purpose model for the agentic era. It built on Gemini 1.5 Flash, Google's most popular developer model at the time, and delivered better quality at similar response speeds.
Google reported that 2.0 Flash outperformed the larger Gemini 1.5 Pro on key benchmarks while running about twice as fast. That balance of speed, cost, and capability made it a default choice for chat, summarization, coding help, and data extraction.
The 2.0 family also included Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite (cost-optimized for large-scale text), Gemini 2.0 Pro (for complex reasoning), and Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, a reasoning variant that works through a problem before answering.
