Celebrating other new years too? Our New Year greetings cover 1 January, and our happy Songkran wishes are ready for the Thai New Year in April.
Lunar New Year marks the start of a new year on the lunisolar calendar, usually falling between late January and mid-February. It is celebrated in many cultures, including Chinese New Year, Vietnamese Tết and Korean Seollal, as well as in other East and Southeast Asian communities. Customs vary, but the core themes are shared: fresh beginnings, family reunion, gratitude for the past year and hope for prosperity and happiness in the year ahead.
Best for: elders, relatives and anyone who appreciates classic wishes for prosperity, health and harmony.
Want to open with a greeting in their language? Claude Sonnet 5 can add one with a translation — just ask someone who speaks it to check before you send:
Write a traditional Lunar New Year greeting for my [relationship] [name], who celebrates [Chinese New Year / Tết / Seollal]. Start with a traditional greeting in [Mandarin / Cantonese / Vietnamese / Korean], give the pronunciation and an English translation, and keep the rest under 40 words.
Best for: parents, grandparents and relatives you gather with for the reunion dinner — or miss when you are far away.
Family greetings land best when they mention a shared tradition. Claude Sonnet 4.6 handles warm family messages well:
Write a Lunar New Year greeting for my [parents / grandparents / family] from [me / our household]. Mention [the reunion dinner, a favourite dish or another family tradition] and [whether we are together or apart this year]. Give me two versions under 60 words.
Best for: close friends, classmates and group chats celebrating together or across time zones.
Want it to sound like your friendship? Claude Haiku 4.5 gives you quick, casual options:
Write a Lunar New Year greeting for my friend [name]. Mention [a memory from this year or a plan we have] and wish them luck for [something they are working toward]. Give me three versions under 40 words, warm and casual.
Best for: colleagues, clients and partners — emails, cards and company messages.
For colleagues and clients, a specific thank-you lands better than generic cheer. If you are sending it by email, the AI email writer can format it, or use this prompt:
Write a professional Lunar New Year greeting to my [colleague / client / partner] [name] from [me / our company]. Thank them for [a specific collaboration this year] and wish them prosperity in the year ahead. Give me three versions under 50 words, warm and respectful.
Best for: WhatsApp, Zalo, KakaoTalk and WeChat messages, captions and stories.
Posting a photo of the reunion dinner or the decorations? The Instagram caption generator handles captions, or use this prompt for quick texts:
Give me ten short Lunar New Year greetings under 10 words each, mixing warm, festive and playful, and include two that mention [the zodiac animal of the year or a detail about the recipient].
Best for: friends starting something new, anyone who had a hard year, and messages meant to encourage.
For encouragement that fits their year, tell the model what they are working toward. GPT-5.6 Sol keeps it hopeful without sounding like a poster:
Write an inspirational Lunar New Year greeting for [name], who is [starting something new / working toward a goal / coming through a hard year]. Make it hopeful but realistic, under 40 words, with one line they could keep.
Best for: mixed audiences, newsletters, neighbours and anyone whose traditions you are not sure of.
Writing for a mixed audience? Gemini 3.5 Flash can give you quick, inclusive variations:
Write five short Lunar New Year greetings for [a newsletter / a school community / neighbours] that respect every tradition that celebrates it, including Chinese New Year, Tết and Seollal. Keep each under 25 words.
In Mandarin, the most common greeting is ‘Xīnnián kuàilè’ (新年快乐, Happy New Year), often paired with ‘Gōngxǐ fācái’ (恭喜发财, wishing you prosperity) — or ‘Gung hei fat choy’ in Cantonese. In Vietnamese, people say ‘Chúc mừng năm mới’ (Happy New Year). In Korean, the traditional Seollal greeting is ‘Saehae bok mani badeuseyo’ (새해 복 많이 받으세요), meaning ‘receive many blessings in the new year’.
Adding one of these phrases to an English message is a warm, respectful touch — just match the greeting to the tradition the recipient celebrates.
The greetings people remember are sincere and specific: a tradition you share, a hope you have for them, or a detail from the year just gone. Match the tone to the relationship — formal for clients, warm for family, playful for friends — and keep it concise.
Chat Smith brings Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Grok together in one app, so you can adapt any greeting for family, friends or clients, translate it into Chinese, Vietnamese or Korean, and compare how several AI models phrase it. When the words are ready, Chat Smith Design Studio turns them into a Lunar New Year card or social post you can customise by simply asking.
Lunar New Year greetings wish health, good fortune, harmony and prosperity at the start of the new year. People share them during celebrations, visits, calls, messages and cards. They can be traditional phrases or personal messages that mention a shared custom or a specific hope. Chat Smith can help you choose and adapt a greeting.
